5 Teen Films We Wish Our Teen Years Had Been Like
“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” – Ferris Bueller.
1. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)
We’ve all skipped a day of school, but let’s be honest, it was either to study some more or to spend the day watching Netflix. Ferris Bueller manages to do in a few hours what we can’t even do in a week off. Accompanied by his girlfriend Sloane and his best friend Cameron, he drives around town and does literally everything while avoiding that his mischief be uncovered. On top of being fantastically entertaining, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is actually wittily written and visually not-so-uninteresting and deserve its title of classic comedy. Ironically, we suggest you watch it… on a day off.
2. The Breakfast Club (1985)
The ultimate “squad goal” don’t you agree? Everybody is, in a way, part of the Breakfast Club; as they so well explained at the end of their detention letter, “each one of us is a brain, and an athlete, and a basket case, a princess and a criminal“. Maybe the film enchanted us with their relatable characters and their unlikely friendships, or perhaps with the rebellious way that the five students decide to spend their Saturday in detention. One thing is for sure: we wouldn’t mind spending the day in Sheerer High’s library with these five misfits.
3. Clueless (1995)
Who never dreamed they could pull off Cher’s classic comeback : “As if!”? If Clueless presents a stereotypical portrayal of high school girls, it goes further than the shallow appearance of its stars. Alright, the protagonist’s entire wardrobe is a character in itself, but who can’t fall in love with Cher’s iconic yellow plaid tailleur? Who wouldn’t want a fashion-smart computer stylist? Costumes aside, the film is in fact a not-so-unrealistic depiction of what teenage crushing looks like, and let’s face it, its quotes are legendary. On that note, we’re “audi“!
4. Rebel Without A Cause (1955)
We have two words for you : James Dean. In the most popular role of his short career, James Dean is the ultimate rebel. Newcomer in a small town, Jim Stark is running away from trouble, but can’t seem to outrun it. Mixed up in teenage fights and stuck in a love triangle from his first day in school, Jim’s good will is not enough to keep him away from problems. In a tormented struggle, he tries to forge himself a noble place in the social complexity that are teenage gangs. His portrayal of the typical 50’s teen with an elvis-like greaser look is a classic, and stands as tender and relevant sixty years later.
5. Pretty In Pink (1986)
Pretty in Pink is named after a 1980 hit by new wave rock group The Psychedelic Furs, and we have to say, the title is very representative of the 1986 flick. Why? Written by the Breakfast Club’s writer and king of 80’s teenage movies, John Hughes, the film is remembered for its bubbly characters, the love story, its but mostly for its soundtrack. Listed in the 25 Greatest Soundtracks by Rolling Stone, it includes singles from Orchestral Manoeuvre in the Dark, New Order and wait for it… The Smiths. Pretty In Pink will immerse you in the records-filled years you still miss or perhaps never experienced, and make you feel 16 again.
