WEEK #2: Jefferson Airplane – Surrealistic Pillow
This week’s album is Jefferson’s Airplane’s Surrealistic Pillow, also known as the Bible of the 1960’s San Francisco rock movement.
The year is 1967 and Jefferson Airplane release their second LP. The world had never heard anything like it. On this record, the band mixed their folk and acid rock influences to produce incredibly avant-gardist tracks which bring anyone back to the era of peace, love and true rock n roll.
Of course, not only the album, the city of San Francisco, but also the year 1967 are all milestones of the Hippie subculture, and the vocals on this album sure help translate the whole mood of the movement to new generations. For example, Grace Slick’s mystical backings on “She Has Funny Cars” and “Today” sum up perfectly the decade’s reigning atmosphere in Western culture: soft, smooth, and out of this world.
