Week #18: Nirvana – In Utero

As the end of the semester drives nears, what better album to listen to than In Utero, this 1993 liberating alternative classic?

Recorded in only two weeks, Nirvana’s third and final album was meant to differ completely from Nevermind, a record considered too polished and perfected. Hoping for a more authentic and raw sound, they paired up with Steve Albini, a studio engineer who helped them achieve the coarse tone they had envisioned.

The thirteen tracks it is composed of mirrored Kurt Cobain’s tormented mind. While the first two studio albums expressed more of a teenager’s angst, In Utero is said to reflect Cobain’s wrathful reaction to the band’s fame and the media.

Songs like “I Hate Myself and I Want to Die” and “Rape Me” received mixed feedback : criticized for their very straightforward titles, they were also acclaimed for their profound and heart-to-heart lyrics.
